India has 25 states and seven union territories. The constitution provides for a High Court in each of its States. The High Court is the highest court of justice in a state. The other courts are subordinate courts. Appeals against the judgement of the District Courts in civil and criminal cases are made before it.
There are some kinds of cases, which can be directly brought before the High Court. Such cases are those which are related to the fundamental rights. Now, the High Courts have also been given the powers to decide about the election petitions.
