The seeds of sunflower contain good quality edible oil (44-50%). Being thermo and photoinsensitive it can be grown throughout the year. It fits well in the multiple cropping systems because of its short growth duration. Its oil cake is rich in protein (40-44%).

Economic importance:

Sunflower oil is important both as an edible oil and also for commercial purposes like soap manufacture, etc.

Climatic requirements:

Sunflower requires bright sunny weather from flowering to maturity. Heavy rains at the flowering stage interferes with pollination and causes rotting of flower bases.
